Transmedia principles

“A process called” convergence of modes “is blurring the lines between media, even among communications between two points, such as mail, telephone and telegraph, and mass communications, such as press, radio and television . A single physical medium (either cable or waves) can transmit services that in the past were provided separate ways. Conversely, a service provided in the past by a particular medium (either radio, television, newspapers or phone) can now be offered by several different physical media. Therefore, it is eroding the ratio of one to one that used to exist between a medium and its use. “

Ithiel de Sola Pool in Convergence Culture by Henry Jenkins extracted from the book On Free Speech in an Electronic Age.

In his blog Henry Jenkins defines the seven principles of transmedia storytelling:

a)                Spreadability vs. Drillability.

Spreadability is the hability and commitment of the viewers for spreading the content through various channels.

Drillability is searching for more information about the universe where the narrative unfolds and possible extensions by viewers.

These are complementary concepts, where spreadability and drillability come together.

b)            Continuity vs. Multiplicity.

The continuity is the consistency and the credibility of the universes created.

Multiplicity is the ability to access alternate versions of the characters and worlds of the stories.

c)            Immersion vs. Extractability.

Immersion means that the viewer comes in all worlds that are part of the transmedia universe.

Extractability involves that the users take elements of the universe to integrate in their daily lifes.

d)            Worldbuilding.

Extensions that give a richer conception of the world where the narrative takes place through experiences in the real world and digital world. Is directly related to immersion and extraction.

e)            Seriality.

Building a series based on the creation of compelling and significant fragments of a story to be distributed across multiple deliveries. In transmedia serialization not only be displayed across multiple segments but also across multiple media.

Break the narrative arc through multiple segments, unique to each platform and expand through different media.

f)             Subjectivity.

Explore the story through different characters and viewpoints.

g)            Performance.

The possibility that the works made by fans become part of the transmedia narrative itself. Being that some of these jobs are accepted or even caused by the author and others do not. Which is reached if is achieved that the public participate actively in the development of the franchise.

These principles can be summarized in the relationship between the three concepts that Henry Jenkins defines as the basis of the culture of convergence:

  • Media convergence..
  • Participatory culture.
  • Collective intelligence.

We will deep over time on these principles and will relate them with which are the four capital elements in transmedia for us, those are the layers, the empathy, the forking paths and the mystery box. Or Matrix, all us, Borges and Blade Runner.

We finish as we start with a quote:

Sense of Life is being happy.
